Nutrition 101: What is a wholesome meal?

Updated: Jul 27, 2021

With the rise in lifestyle epidemics like diabetes, obesity, cancer, hypertension, etc. nutritious and healthy diets have become buzz words. In a bid to shed extra kilos a lot of us have been reaching out to fad diets and weight loss shortcuts. But, we often fail to realize that healthy living and nutrition aren't buzz words. They aren't meant to be a fad. There is no shortcut to healthy living. A healthy diet is a lifestyle rather than a fad.

This can be more clear if explored from the basics of nutrition. Nutrition is essentially what we need to survive. The food we intake is broken down by our cells into nutrients and used up as energy. Nutrients are of two types i.e Macronutrients and Micronutrients.

Our bodies need both macro and micronutrients. A wholesome meal should consist of recommended daily intake of all nutrient types.

However, the quality of nutrients depends on various factors. Carbohydrates for example can be further broken down into simple and complex carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates play a vital role in keeping us full for longer as they contain a high amount of fiber. Similarly, fats are of two types, saturated and unsaturated. High consumption of saturated fats is risky for heart health. A healthy and wholesome meal should limit simple carbs and saturated fats to a minimum. A well-balanced diet should consist of 45%-65% carbohydrates, 10%-35% proteins, and 20%-35% fats.
